Class Policy

Prepaid registration is required for all classes at Pottstown Sewing. Final day for registration is three days prior to class session, or when the class is full. Class fees include classroom time with one of our qualified instructors, any patterns and/or instructions as required, and some supplies for the project, unless otherwise noted. A list of any additional supplies, if needed, will be provided upon paid registration. Paid participants receive a 15% discount off all non-sale items purchased for the class. Bring your own sewing machine, serger, or embroidery machine in good working order for the project classes as appropriate. You will also need basic sewing supplies for the project classes. Please label all equipment with your name, so we can return it to you if it gets left behind. The maximum number of participants varies by class, and is usually between 8 and 15. Check the sign up list for each class for space availability. If class minimum is not met by three days prior to class, Pottstown Sewing reserves the right to cancel the class and refund 100% of the class fee or transfer the fee to another class of your choice. If you need to withdraw from a class, call us prior to the start of the class and we will transfer your paid class fee to another class of your choice. Class fees are not refundable or transferable after the start of class.

Now Offering Private Lessons – Is there a project you want help with, or a technique you’ve wanted to learn? Pottstown Sewing is now offering private lessons in addition to our catalog of classes. Individual classes are $20.00 per hour, or round up a friend or two for a semi-private lesson and save. Two-person classes are $15.00 per person per hour; three-person (or more) classes are $10.00 per person per hour. If you need to withdraw from a Private Lesson, call us prior to the start of the class and we will transfer your paid class fee to another available private lesson block. Class fees are not refundable or transferable after the start of class




FEBRUARY CLASSES



Basic Sewing – This is a four-part class to teach basic sewing skills.  It is designed for the person who has either never sewn or not sewn for a while and wants to learn from the beginning.  You will learn what all those crazy markings on a pattern mean.  Sewing hems, gathers, elastic, buttons, buttonholes, and zippers are all included in this class.  All you need for this class is a sewing machine in good working order and to know how to thread it, wind a bobbin, select stitches, and other basics of using your machine.  If you don’t know how to use your machine, please call us to arrange a class to learn that.  If you don’t have a machine, come see us and we can fix you up with a new machine or a reconditioned used one.  $60.00 includes the four two-hour classes, some supplies, and instructions.

Flatlocked Table Runner – Use your serger for more than seams.  This is an easy project that will teach you how to use flatlocking. You may even learn more about using decorative threads.  Beginners are welcome!  Make a new table runner to match your decor or make one for a specific holiday or occasion.  $20.00 includes the 2 two-hour classes and instructions

Embroidered Welcome Banner – If you have seen the Welcome wall haning in our store, you may have asked for this class.  The letters are built into the ESE esante, ESG ellageo, BLG ellegante, and BLSO ellisimo.  If you own a different embroidery machine, you can use your largest letters and add florals to them.  $20.00 includes the2  two-hour classes and instructions.

Buttons and Scraps Wall Hanging – Make this easy to piece appliqué wall hanging for your sewing room or as a gift for a sewing buddy.  Dig through your scraps, gather your buttons, and join the fun.  $20.00 includes the2  two-hour classes and instructions.

Flying Geese – Using the pattern Fly Away Home, you can make this quilt in one of several sizes and/or make a pillow sham.  Flying geese look difficult because of the triangles and point, but they are not hard.  Come take this class and see how easy they can be.  $30.00 includes the three two-hour classes and instructions.

Hash Browns – Two blocks, nine patch and square in a square, each with quarter triangles to make larger blocks are the basis of this quilt.  Add borders and you are done.  This pattern is great for scraps or for a tonal look.  Let your imagination be your guide.  You may make this any size you wish.  $30.00 includes the three two-hour classes and instructions.

Small Quilted Purse – A walking foot may be a mystery to you.  It feeds the top layer of fabric as your machine’s feed dogs feed the bottom.  This allows you to quilt as well as to sew long seams that come out even.  The small purse you will make in this class can be used as an evening bag if you wish, or why not make one to match an outfit.  Your choice of fabrics make it our own.  $20.00 includes the 2 two-hour classes and instructions

Cupcake Placemat – Birthdays come throughout the year.  This festive placemat is a great addition to your birthday decorations.  You can even embroider “Happy Birthday” and/or a name on it.  It is so easy to make you might make one for each of your friends an family members.  $10.00 includes the two-hour class and instructions.

Ecology Bag – Some stores are selling cloth bags to use instead of paper or plastic.  Support the ecology with your own eco-bag.  This particular one folds easily into itsown pocket making it a cinch to take with you.  Kat Whitt for Serendipity Studio designed this includes the two-hour class and instructions.

Let’s Get It Done -  A project that you need just a little bit of help with is the perfect excuse you need to sign up for this.  You get two hours in our classroom.  A teacher is available as you need her, but she doesn’t hover or smother you.  The charge is only $5.00.

Charity Sewing  -. If you would like to set aside time to work on any charity project, sign up for one of our classes.  You can make pillowcases for ConKerr Cancer, blankets for Project Linus, pillowcase dresses for Africa, embroider Dr. Cubby on bandanas for the Center for Courageous kids, or any other charity project.  We will help you if you need it.  There is no charge for this class.

MARCH CLASSES

Basic Quilt Piecing – This is a four-part class to teach basic quilt skills.  If you aren’t sure of how to put the pieces together to make a quilt top, this class will teach basic techniques.  You will make a sampler table runner while learning how to make your points “pointy”, how to appliqué, etc.  $40.00 includes the four two-hour classes and instructions.

Embroider Bandanas for CCK –  Just bring your enthusiasm.  We will supply the fabric, thread, stabilizers, etc.  CCK is a camp for seriously-ill children.  We are making bananas for the children to wear and take home after camp.  Be part of this great cause and make a child smile.  You don’t need any experience.  We will show you how.  Stay as long as you like.  Have fun while helping others.  If you have a Baby Lock embroidery machine, you may bring it if you wish.  Feel free to call for more info.   There is no charge for this.
Come anytime Thurs., Mar. 22nd, Fri., Mar. 23rd, or Sat. Mar. 24th between 10 and 5 each day.  

Stars and Geese –  This class is for the intermediate quilter, or someone with a little piecing experience.  Featured techniques include appliqué and triangles.  The stars are large enough to make learning appliqué easy.  The technique for the flying geese is surprisingly easy.  You might overcome your fear of triangles.  You will even learn how to echo quilt and stitch in the ditch.  $30.00 includes the three two-hour classes and instructions.

Trip Around the World Quilt – Trip around the world is a quilt that has been around for many years.  We made our sample using 5 different fabrics.  Once you learn the technique you could make your quilt using a larger number of different fabrics.  $30.00 includes the three two-hour classes and instructions.

Centennial Stars Quilt – Small appliquéd stars set off the log cabin style quilt.  Small strips of a wide variety of fabrics make this quilt great for using up your scraps if you wish.  You can do this larger than the pattern, like we did our sample.  $30.00 includes the three two-hour classes and instructions.

Rotary Cutting Tips and Tricks – Are you unsure about your cutting?  Do your pieces not come out quite right?  Inaccurate cutting of your quilt pieces may be the reason you are having trouble with your quilt making.  This class is to help you improve your rotary cutting techniques.  You will need to bring your cutter, mat, ruler and some fabrics to practice on.  $10.00 includes the two-hour class and instructions.

Quilt binding Techniques – Would you like to learn how to do your quilt binding?  Sometimes getting those corners right is a pain.  We will try to show you how to make the edges of your quilt look as nice as the main part.  $10.00 includes the two-hour class and instructions.

Serger Windsock – With windy March and April coming, this windsock will add color and movement to your outdoor space.  It makes a nice change from the flags people put in their gardens or in front of the house.  The wave stitch on some Baby Lock sergers will add a nice touch if you wish.  $10.00 includes the two-hour class and instructions.

Jeans Purse – Funky purses made with old jeans are still “in”.  Buttons and trims can help you bring out your own style.  Who doesn’t have an old pair of jeans that you no longer wear but don’t want to throw away.  Recycle that pair of jeans into a unique purse.  $10.00 includes the two-hour class and instructions.

Embroidered Bag – Make a bag for your shoes for travelling, for your Bingo supplies, for your favorite grandchild’s crayons, or whatever else you can dream up.  Embroidering the name and purpose of the bag makes it so special to its owner.  They are so easy, you might end up making a bunch.  $10.00 includes the two-hour class and instructions.

Embroidered Easter Napkin or Breadcloth – Easter is just around the corner.  Many families celebrate with a wonderful dinner.  Add an elegant touch to your table with embroidered napkins and/or breadcloth.  A bunny sticking his head out of the corner of the basket of rolls will tickle the fancy of the children at your celebration.  Or use whatever design you choose for a different look. $10.00 includes the two-hour class and instructions.

18” Doll Dress and Bloomers – Create a country day dress for your 18” doll.  Colorful calico, delicate lace, and rick rack combine to make this colorful addition to your doll’s wardrobe.  You will learn a variety of sewing techniques in this class.  $20.00 includes the two two-hour classes and instructions.

Disappearing Nine Patch – The nine patch is a traditional quilt block.  By cutting and rotating you nine patch blocks, you get a whole new look.  It is all done in squares – not a triangle in sight!  This quilt can be made by either the beginner or the more experienced quilter.  $30.00 00 includes the three two-hour classes and instructions.

Rag Quilt – An easy quilt even for a beginner, the rag quilt features “ragged” seams to give it a fun, comfy, casual look.  The technique for making this quilt has you quilt each block as you go, making it super easy for any level of experience.  It is usually made using homespuns as they “rag” nicely.  $30.00 includes the three two-hour classes and instructions.

Serger Bowtie Pillow – This pattern is a simple bow tie pattern using three seams.  Inserting a bit of stuffing into the center of the tie, adds dimension.  We are showing a pillow, but you can make a small quilt.  $20.00 includes the two two-hour classes and instructions.

Embroidered Placemat with Utensil Holder – You don’t have to know much about using your embroidery machine to make this unique placemat.  It looks difficult but is surprisingly easy.  It is all in the technique.  You might end up making these for various occasions.   $10.00 includes the two-hour class and instructions.

18” Doll Bathrobe – This adorable bathrobe can be made using either your serger or your sewing machine.  You decide which to use.  You can even use a lightweight fabric and make it as a beach cover-up instead of a bathrobe.  Your doll could be the best-dressed doll around.  $20.00 includes the two two-hour classes and instructions.

Cute Stuffed Bear – Do you know someone who likes cuddly stuffed bears?  Make a fabric bear for a gift for that special person.  This bear has movable joints so it can be lots of fun for children of all ages who like to play with their stuffed friends.  $20.00 includes the two two-hour classes and instructions.

Batik Purse – Spring and summer are right for making a cute purse to match a special outfit.  You can even make several – a green one for all you green outfits, a red one for all your red outfits, etc.  This purse is easy to make and add a special touch as a fashion accessory.  $20.00 includes the two two-hour classes and instructions.
