 Class Policy

Prepaid registration is required for all classes at Pottstown Sewing.  A list of any additional supplies will be provided upon paid registration. Paid participants receive a 15% discount off all non-sale items purchased for the class. Bring your own sewing machine, serger, or embroidery machine in good working order for the project classes as appropriate. You will also need basic sewing supplies for the project classes.  If you need to withdraw from a class, call us prior to the start of the class and we will transfer your paid class fee to another class of your choice. Class fees are not refundable or transferable after the start of class. Now offering Private Lessons.  Is there a project you want help with, or a technique you've wanted to learn? Pottstown Sewing is now offering private lessons in addition to our catalog of classes. Individual classes are $30.00 for the first hour, which includes an inspection of you sewing machine ahead of time to be sure it is working properly.  After that the fee is $20.00 per hour.  If you need to withdraw from a Private Lesson, call us prior to the start of the class and we will transfer your paid class fee to another available private lesson block. Class fees are not refundable or transferable after the start of class.

Free Embroidery Machine Tryout – You Keep the Project – Here is your chance to come sew on a Baby Lock embroidery machine and you even get to keep the project you make. The New Baby Lock Verve is a small sewing and embroidery machine that packs a lot of punch. Great for taking with you to classes, to college, or wherever. Try the embroidery and sewing as you make a tote embroidered with a fancy initial. There is a $5.00 signup fee, but you get a $5.00 credit toward your purchase at the time of the class.

Embroidery Play Date – Do you want to build a snowman? Do you hate the cold? Do you really dislike snow? How do you feel about shoveling? Fear no more. You can now enjoy winter in Pennsylvania by making your very own indoor snowballs! Soft, jolly snowballs to look at or to toss in the comfort of your home. And the best part is that there is no “melting”. So, sign up so that you, too, can fortify your supply of snow fort ammunition! Make sure that you not only sign up for the play date, but lay-away the required kit too. $10.00 per class or $55.00 for one year. Sun., Jan. 21, 1:00-3:00 or Mon., Jan. 22, 9:00-11:00
Basic Sewing – This is a four-part class to teach basic sewing skills. It is designed for the person who has either never sewn or not sewn for a while and wants to learn from the beginning. You will learn what all those crazy markings on a pattern mean. Sewing hems, gathers, elastic, buttons, buttonholes, and zippers are all included in this class. All you need for this class is a sewing machine in good working order and to know how to thread it, wind a bobbin, select stitches, and other basics of using your machine. If you don’t know how to use your machine, please call us to arrange a class to learn that. If you don’t have a machine, come see us and we can fix you up with a new machine or a reconditioned used one. $60.00 includes the four two-hour classes, some supplies, and instructions.

Machine Embroidery & Computer Help - Are your computer skills less than you would like? This class will teach you how to make a folder to store your embroidery designs, how to get designs from your computer into this folder, how to get designs from a CD into your folder, how to get designs from the folder into your embroidery machine. After this class, you should be comfortable to find a design you like and get it into your embroidery machine. $20.00 includes the two two-hour classes and instructions.

Cute Monster Panel – This cute panel can easily be made into a throw for that special child in your life. Learn how to add borders and then how to quilt using your walking foot. This is a quick project for anyone wanting to make a cute gift. (You can even come in the next week for a class on binding your throw. See below.) $20.00 includes the two two-hour classes and instructions.

Quilt Binding – Some quilters are not sure how to easily add binding to their quilts, especially at the corners. We love to teach you how to do this task, including mitering the corners. You can use a quilt you have ready for binding, or just practice on a small quilt sandwich. $10.00 includes the two-hour class and instructions.

Contra Dance – Here is a great little quilt for showcasing a medium or a largescale print. It features an easy, fun technique for achieving an on-point setting without diagonal rows or cutting of setting triangles! Only three different blocks create this whole quilt. This project also features mitered corners! $30.00 includes the three two-hour classes and instructions.

A Touch of Attitude –The accent color creates the “attitude” in this quilt. The pieced border is a nice added touch. This is for a beginner to intermediate quilter. There are no bias sides of triangles to stretch out of shape. Come join us and learn how easy it can be. $30.00 includes the three two-hour classes and instructions.

Got Squares – Here is another quilt with an easy way to do “on point” without the issues of dealing with bias. This pattern is not good for obvious horizontal prints. $30.00 includes the three two-hour classes and instructions.

Charity Sewing for CCK – Travel Quilt. Free class to make small quilts for The Center for Courageous Kids, a camp for medically challenged children. This pattern is easy enough for any sewer. You don’t have to quilt it. We will do that for you. Why not spend a little time learning more about quilting and making something for a good cause. We supply the instruction, have the quilt quilted, and send it to CCK. We will even supply you with the fabrics if you want to help but prefer not to buy the fabrics. We will embroider the camp mascot on your quilt for you if you don’t have an embroidery machine, or we will give you the design so you can do the embroidery. Stop in, call, or email for more info. There is no charge for this class and we give you a 30% discount for the fabrics and batting you buy from us for this project.

Let’s Get It Done - A project that you need just a little bit of help with is the perfect excuse you need to sign up for this. You get two hours in our classroom. A teacher is available as you need her, but she doesn’t hover or smother you. The charge is only $5.00.

Free Serger Make & Take – Eyeglass Case - Here is your chance to come try a Baby Lock serger and you even get to keep the project you make. The Baby Lock Eclipse DX has jet-air threading, built in narrow rolled hem, built in differential feed and lots more. Baby Lock sergers are easy to operate and come with lots of features. Come sew on one to see for yourself. There is a $5.00 signup fee, but you get a $5.00 credit toward your purchase at the time of the class. This is a quick project.

Embroidery Play Date – Quilt Blocks in the Hoop Learn to make quilt blocks with ease and accuracy by using your embroidery machine. Minimize fabric waste. Utilize scraps. Quilt each block before assembly. The options are limitless when you see how simple it is to create blocks in the hoop. Make sure that you not only sign up for the play date, but lay-away the required kit too. $10.00 per class or $55.00 for one year.

Beginning Quilt Piecing – This is a four-part class to teach basic quilt skills. If you aren’t sure of how to put the pieces together to make a quilt top, this class will teach basic techniques. You will make a sampler table runner while learning how to make your points “pointy”, how to appliqué, etc. $40.00 includes the four two-hour classes and instructions.

Barbara’s Quick Tips and Tricks for Quilt Piecing – So you have tried quilt piecing, but could use some helpful hints. Come get tips and tricks on sewing a perfect ¼” seam, matching seams, easing, and more. You may learn the techniques on scrap fabric or you can learn the techniques while making a charity quilt top for Michael’s House. Feel free to call Barbara if you have questions. $20.00 includes the two two-hour classes and instructions.

Pet Rescue Panel – The pet rescue panel is cute and can just be quilted. However we are teaching how to cut apart a panel and do something creative. You will do the cutting and most of the sewing in the class. What a fun quilt for your favorite dog lover. $30.00 includes the three two-hour classes and instructions.

Pleasing Patchwork – This pretty quilt will teach you to make half square triangle units, rather than cutting the half square triangles and sewing on the bias. You don’t have to be and advanced quilter to succeed in making this quilt. Come in to learn this fun technique. $30.00 includes the three two-hour classes and instructions.

Toys that Travel – Perfect for the beginner or a fast project for the more experienced quilter. A great way to learn applique. The fabrics for the toys can come from your stash. Just add background, border, and sashing. Join the class and make your quilt for that special child of any age. $30.00 includes the three two-hour classes and instructions.

Serger Magazine Holder - Are you ready to go outside the box? Here’s a project that is not only fun & easy to make but extremely practical. Who doesn’t have lots and lots of sewing, cooking, and crafting magazines? You will be able to whip these magazine holders up in less time than it takes to make brownies—notice, I didn’t say “less time than it takes to eat them”. Use cheerful fabrics, whimsical fabrics or functional fabrics. Use whatever makes you smile. $10.00 includes the two-hour class and instructions.

Quilts for Michael’s House – Michael’s House is a child advocacy center for abused children. Each child is assigned one advocate who helps the child through the trying times including the trial of the abuser, when necessary. An abused child finds love and comfort when cuddling in a quilt. Help us supply this worthy endeavor so every child who comes in for help gets a quilt to enjoy and keep.
There is no charge for this class. You may supply your own fabrics or use a kit we have ready to go.

Free Make & Take – “Cosmetic” Case - Learn how to use some of the interesting features and functions on the Baby Lock Katherine while making this case that can be used for cosmetics or to organize other things. There is no need to bring anything. We supply what you will need. There will be a bonus for anyone who purchases a Katherine in the class. There is a $5.00 signup fee, but you get a $5.00 credit toward your purchase of notions etc. at the time of the class.

221 Featherweight Service Class – Do you own a Singer 221 Featherweight and wonder what you should be doing to maintain it? Would you like to be able to do a little more than just oil your baby? She will love you and serve you well when she is well cared for. You will learn more about tensions and how to adjust $85.00 includes the 4-hour class and some supplies.

Introduction to Free Motion Quilting with Linda Hall – Linda Hall is again coming to Pottstown Sewing to teach the basics of free motion quilting. In this class you will learn not only free motion techniques, but also how to prepare your “quilt sandwich”, needles and threads to use and much more. You will also get to see some of Linda’s unique creations. The class runs from 9am to 4pm with a break for lunch. The class fee is $85.00. Be sure to stop in for your supply list.

Template use in Quilting with Linda Hall – Using templates on your quilts can add to the versatility of your quilting. Linda will show you how to get creative with the templates in Baby Lock’s free motion quilting system. If you haven’t tried the templates we will allow you to use them for the class. Free Motion Feathers with Linda Hall – Free motion feathers are gorgeous, but most of us don’t know how to make them. Linda is an expert not only at making them but at teaching others how to make beautiful feathers. Come take her class so that you too can embellish your quilts with fabulous feathers. Once you learn the magic, you’ll be able to embroider these not only for yourself, but for sports teams, offices, and events! Are you tired of purchasing mass produced, impersonal “MADE BY” labels? Now you will be able to embroider your own unique labels using the same technique. This will be one time that staying between the lines is not on the road. Go Crazy – Go Crazy seems like an appropriate name for this quilt because it looks like a challenge. Actually, it is a variation of log cabin. Once you see the way it works it is not difficult at all. You don’t have to be an advanced quilter to succeed in making this quilt. Come in to learn this fun technique. $30.00 includes the three two-hour classes and instructions.

Crazy Quilt Placemats – We are thinking SPRING! Come join us to update your Spring Décor with Crazy Quilt Placemats. Our bright examples are sewn using the new decorative stitches included in the upgrades for the Aria, Crescendo, Journey, and Unity, but they will look just as fresh in your favorite colors and any decorative stitches. The three classes will teach you how to arrange your fabrics, sew the decorative stitches, and finish with a fold over binding. $30.00 includes the three two-hour classes and instructions.

Fluttering Butterflies – This is a striking Bargello quilt. If you haven’t tried to do a Bargello, now is the time. Take the class and see how much fun it can be. Go with soft colors, or go more modern with bright, cheerful colors. $30.00 includes the three two-hour classes and instructions.

Ryan’s Case for Smiles, formerly known as ConKerr Cancer – Help make pillow cases for sick children. This is a local charity that gives pillowcases to the pediatric units in hospitals. If you would like to help, you can come in and sew pillowcases, donate fabrics, and/or donate cash. We can supply you with fabrics for pillowcases or you may bring some in. We would prefer that you bring in your own sewing machine so you can enjoy sewing for charity without the hassle of learning a different machine. If you would like to help make pillowcases but can’t come at the times shown below, stop in for the directions. We can even give you fabric to make the pillow cases if you need it. Of course, there is no charge for this class.
